Is Your Website ADA Compliant? Learn Why it's so Important.
Is Your Website ADA Compliant?
Title III of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) states that businesses must comply with accessibility requirements for people with disabilities. This also includes websites which need to be accessible to individuals with visual, hearing or physical disabilities. Compliance includes screen reader software for audio translation, Braille displays, keyboard navigation for people who cannot use a mouse, text captions for images which are compatible with screen readers and the ability to adjust font size and color.
Why is ADA Website Compliance Important?
The Department of Justice has not mandated a clear federal directive on website ADA compliance and as a result, law firms have been actively pursuing suits against businesses who are not ADA compliant. Cases continue to increase every year - 2019 saw a 51.7% increase in the number of ADA compliance lawsuits from the previous year. Because of this it is important for businesses to do all they can to mitigate the risk of potentially costly litigation.
What Steps to Mitigate Litigation Should you Take?
- A full audit of your website is also necessary. This review will enable you to create a plan to become ADA compliant in the future. This will include an audit of your source code along with having a third party audit your site to evaluate your current level of accessibility and next steps you need to take.
- Create a reasonable timeline that makes the most sense for your business but also plan to take immediate action by adopting improvements that can be implemented right away. Plan on integrating accessibility into your regular updates and as you add new pages.
- Create user feedback pages and encourage site visitors to respond. You will also need to make sure someone is available to assist if users are having accessibility issues.
ADA compliance can be somewhat costly depending on the state of your site but a lawsuit could be even more costly. If you have more questions regarding ADA website compliance, contact the experts at JET Advertising today!
