Social Media Is A Good Addition

The hottest buzzword in Marketing is social media. Everyone that is involved in marketing is talking about it, and trying to get their heads around what it is and how to use it to their advantage. What I think many companies are doing is forgetting to ask themselves if they should be doing social media. The fact is that social media works, but only when done properly. And what’s more important is that it is not a replacement for other media.

If your company has a good handle on marketing and is doing the basics, then yes devote some time and energy into the social media world. Done right with a big picture approach social medial will open new doors and keep your positive image out there. However if you have to cut your advertising budget to take a piss poor attempt at social media you are making a mistake. Typically social media is a good addition if you already have a handle on your PR and already have a consistent budget devoted to internet marketing. If however you have a tighter than ever marketing budget, and you think social media is the place to spend it, you should think again.

Social media works very much like social networking. It’s a two way street with a give and take relationship. You have to be responsive to your audience, and you have to be willing to devote your time to providing useful information and helpful advice. It is PR that networks with the common person. The bottom line is that social marketing is a great new marketing avenue. Just be sure you are prepared for this form of marketing before jumping on the bandwagon.
