Analyzing your landing page

When visitors get to your landing page (most likely home page) it is important to have your logo or business name in the top left so visitors know that they are at the right place.  People will naturally go through your website in a "Z" fashion, starting in the top left (with your logo) and ending in the bottom right.  Horizontal bars in the middle of the page should be avoided as they disrupt the flow.  It is imperative for your call to action to be in the bottom right, as the last thing that your visitors see.  

Make sure that your most important information, including your call to action, are above the "fold" (The phrase above the fold is taken from newspapers.  In other words you want the most imporant information to be seen without scrolling down.)

Keep your content straightforward and to the point.  Don’t dilute your message with information that can be found on secondary pages.  Short pargraphs and bullet points are great for acheiving this.  Make sure that your text is at an elementary reading level, so it is easy for all visitors to read and comprehend.

Also, you want to build trust and establish your credentials with your website visitors right away, with things like the Better Business logo, testimonials and a link to your privacy policy.  

Any images found on your website should help your message, not hurt it.  Extravagant animations, may detract from your message.  Images that are too large may take too long to load and end up in frustrated visitors who leave your website right away.  Make sure your images or animations are optimized so they do not take to long to load and are relevant to your most important information.
